Empire of Illusion

The Empire of Illusion was an interesting read. Going off of the two chapters discussed on Tuesday, I had a lot to say about the chapter on Illusion of Love and Illusion of Literacy. The first chapter hit dead on many of the facts of the life we all live today. We spoke about cell phones, computers, and televisions. We basically got down to the point that our lives are revolved around technology as a sense of communication and access to the outside world. We all mentioned our addictions to Iphones and Blackberrys, needless to say almost everyone in the class owns one of those two brands. Our phones have texting, our mail, the internet, games, calculators, tip calculators, calendars, alarm clocks. Basically it sums up about 10 different technological devices in one small little phone. Its scary. We are addicted. It would be hard for us to live without our cell phones for a day. My mother even asks how I can send 3000 text messages in one month and have the time to do that. She doesn't understand. It takes no time and it is just natural. I don't even want to mention what my 93 year old grandmother says when speaking about cell phones AND computers. She doesn't even know how to work her land-line telephone, let alone an IPhone. Although we spent about 45 minutes discussing how disgusting our addiction is to technology, we will not change our habits. That is quite fine. I do not want to. In order to succeed in today's world we have to keep up with the technology and changing pace of life.

Changing the world one device at a time.

The next topic we spoke about was the sex and pornography business that is so prevalent in today's society. I thought this chapter was very interesting but I felt as though our conversation in class was much more intriguing. We spoke about how these girls were abused and degraded and did not have the ability to voice their opinions during their "employment". I stated my opinion that unless these girls had no other way to make a living, which is quite unbelievable, and were coerced into working in such a demanding and degrading business, I did not feel bad for their mistreatment. Although I completely am appalled by the treatment that they receive, I feel that if they didn't like their treatment then they should stand up for their integrity and find another source of employment, perhaps one that is a bit more classy. By just abiding to the dominance and rules of the men, we are basically falling back into the trap of the subordination of women and domination of men. Perhaps the men, instead of making fools out of themselves and treating women so inhumanely, should advise the women who have low self-confidence and low self-esteem to a psychologist. Such a business just shows the cruel capacity of people in the world today and the disgusting thriving desire towards money. Stay classy girls.

This is an interesting website I found, a Frontline Documentary.

  1. Hey Vanessa!! Nice blog!! So I was reading your blog and I couldn't help but agree with you on how addicted to all this technology everyone is. It's a bit ridiculous but yet we all fall into the same trap. WIthout my cell phone I would be liberated but lost at the same time. As sad as that is, it's very true and we are all attached. That's why I call my phone the CRACKBERRRRYYY! haha. Anyway, I agree with you and I think that we are all way too attached to technology.
